Organized and hosted an evening of readings entitled “Have We Learned Anything in the Last Two Years” on Thursday, September 11, 2003 at Quimby’s Bookstore in Chicago. Readers included Brett Van Emst (Midnight Mind Magazine), Al Burian (Burn Collector), Alicia Dorr (Random Life in Progress) and Anthony Rayson (Thought Bombs).

Organized, hosted and moderated a panel at the event “Do Our Media Serve Us?” at Columbia College’s Hokin Annex that took place on September 26, 2003, which featured a full day of panels, speakers, readings and a film screening.
Mitchell Szczepanczyk (Chicago Media Action president) gave a presentation entitled “The new FCC Regulations & the further consolidation of corporate media.”
The panels conducted were “The Growing Gap Between Public Interest & Mainstream Media Representation” [panelists included Barbara Iverson (Columbia College journalism professor), Chuck Mertz (WNUR’s “This Is Hell!” radio show host), Brent Ritzel (Zine Guide & Tail Spins) and Grant Schreiber (Judas Goat Quarterly)], “State-Run Media? Propaganda & the Manipulation of the Public Mind” [panelists included Scott Lipscomb (Northwestern University associate professor in music, Iraq Body Count researcher), Paul Street (ZNet commentator, Black Commentator contributor) and Aaron Cynic (Diatribe zine)] and “Alternatives to Bush in 2004” [panelists included Louis Silverstein (Columbia College liberal education professor), John Stevenson (Columbia College liberal education professor), Anthony Rayson (Thought Bombs zine).

Conducted three hour-long workshops for scores of aspiring journalists at the Illinois State High School Press Association (ISHSPA) Conference that took during the day of Friday, October 3, 2003 at the Illini Union in Champaign, IL. The sessions concerned “Maintaining Your Own Voice (In the Process of Journalism)”, “The Importance of Self-Publishing” and and “Start Your Own Zine: Q & A Session” (which was conducted with Daniel Sinker of Punk Planet).

Co-organized, gave keynote address, moderated a panel and participated in another panel at the Midwest Independent Media Conference that took place the day of Saturday, October 11, 2003 at Public Space One in Iowa City, Iowa. The panels conducted included “The Mechanics of Self-Publishing” and “The World of Zining”, plus a READ Zine Making Party was conducted by coordinator Bradley Adita, during which more than thirty individuals contributed to a spontaneous zine creation. Kembrew McLeod (University of Iowa professor) gave a presentation and answered questions concerning freedom of expression and intellectual property laws.

Organized and hosted an evening of readings concerning “Love & Hate” that took place on December 10, 2003 at Quimby’s Bookstore in Chicago. Readers included Michele Walker (independent writer), Grant Schreiber (Judas Goat Quarterly) and Seth Emily (Americant zine), among others.

Organized, hosted and participated in a late afternoon of readings that took place on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the Independent Media Center in Champaign, Illinois. The readings were accompanied by improvised ambient jazz, performed by Jason Finkelman on percussion and Paul Riismandel on guitar. Readers included Emerson Dameron (Wherewithal zine), Richard Frazin (Champaign-area astrophysicist), Aaron Cynic (Diatribe zine) and Keight Sandler (Backstabber zine), among others.

Participated in the zine readings at the Foul zine Third Anniversary Party that took place on Saturday, January 3, 2004 at the Independent Video Alliance in Chicago.

Organized and participated in the first ever live performance at Chicago’s renowned kitsch store Uncle Fun, an evening of readings in their upstairs loft on Saturday, January 10, 2004 featuring Emerson Dameron (Wherewithal zine), Larry Roth (1544 zine), Michelle Aiello (Indigo zine) and Ken Hunt (Perpetually Bad Timing zine), among others.

Conducted a workshop for forty high school students entitled “Getting Your Work Out There: Networking & Distribution of Self-Published Materials” during Raw Voices 2004: Teens in the Media Arts–an annual one-day event for teens in the media arts & their adult mentors to come together for networking, workshops and sharing work–that took place on Saturday, February 7, 2004 at Columbia College in Chicago.

Co-organized and participated in a benefit for Redline Radio Radio (99.1 FM pirate radio station) featuring “Irrelevant Films & Irreverent Readings” that took place the evening of Saturday, March 20, 2004 at the Independent Video Alliance in Chicago. Organized activities for a full-day field trip for an entire high school class (Jesse Senechal’s ROAR Magazine class from Kelvyn Park High School, Chicago) that took place on Friday, April 23, 2004. The day’s activities included visits to Punk Planet’s and Venus Magazine’s headquarters, where the students were treated to tours of the sites and question/answer sessions with the publishers and staff. The field trip culminated in a visit to independent publishing emporium Quimby’s Bookstore, were the students perused and shopped, with several of them reading to all in attendence from their personal writings/zines. Readers included Isabel Jaimes, Christina Kortuba, Dennys Lucero, Rafael Diaz, Mayra Guitierrez, Alex Chamorro, Daisy Pelayo and Anais Torres.

Organized the “Self-Publishing & Media Reform Fest”–a full day of workshops, readings and panels regarding self-publishing and media reform concerns–at the WLUW Record & Zine Fair, which took place 10 am-6 pm on Saturday, April 24, 2004 at the Pulaski Park Fieldhouse in Chicago.

Also organized and moderated a panel entitled “Workshopping Zines: Critical Analysis of Self-Published Media” on Sunday, June 20, 2004 for a packed room of conference goers.

Emceed and stage managed eight evenings of Evanston’s Starlight Summer Concert Series that took place in Evanston’s Dawes and James Parks between July 1 and August 16, 2004. Worked with the following bands and performers: Midway Ramblers, Sunnyside Up, Larry Taylor Band, Conjunto, Malik’s Ultimate Band, Ken Arlen Orchestra, Katherine Hughes & friends and The Chicago Kingsnakes.

Emceed and stage managed for the two days of the “Ethnic Arts Festival” that took place on Saturday & Sunday, July 18-19, 2004 at Dawes Park in Evanston, Illinois. Worked with a dozen musical and dance acts, including Morikeba Kouyate, Tamboula Ethnic Dance Company,  S.O.U.L. Creations, The Sheila Tulley Irish Dancers, Las Guitarras de Espana and Sones de Mexico.

Conducted three hour-long workshops for scores of aspiring journalists at the Illinois State High School Press Association (ISHSPA) Conference that took during the day of Friday, September 24, 2004 in Champaign, Illinois at the Illini Union. This lively and interactive panel consisted of Greg Kot (Chicago Tribune music critic/columnist), Peter Strand (entertainment lawyer), Preston Klik (musician/record label owner), Amy Lombardi (PR firm owner/representative) and moderator Lois Roewade (Evanston Arts Council chairperson).

Organized and moderated the education panel “Talk Arts: The Legalities of Art – Legal Basics” that took place on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at Evanston’s Noyes Cultural Arts Center. This panel addressed a variety of legal issues concerning the creative and performing arts, and consisted of Andrea E. Friedman (attorney specializing in advertising/marketing transactions), Linda Forman (tax and consulting practice president), Shawn Murphy (Midwest Director of Membership for ASCAP) and William Rattner (Lawyers for the Creative Arts Executive Director).

Ethnic Arts Festival Planning Committee member and Evanston Arts Council liaison to the festival, responsible for booking spoken word stage at the event that will take place July 16-17, 2005 at Dawes Park in Evanston, Illinois.
